What does "Open" mean?
For the Maricopa Community Colleges, "Open" is about removing barriers to learning. It generally refers to two main concepts:
- Open Educational Resources (OER): These are high-quality teaching and learning materials—like textbooks, videos, and modules—that are free to access. Because they are "open," faculty can remix, adapt, and share them to better fit their specific course needs.
- Open Educational Practices (OEP): This is a student-centered approach to teaching. It uses open resources as a catalyst for instructional practices that engage students in their learning, foster collaboration, and create a more inclusive educational experience.
